Ways to help
your child have a successful transition to school.
 |
-
Attend orientation day, and any other transition days, that
the school offers.
-
Familiarise your child with the school and its surroundings.
-
Make
sure your child gets plenty of sleep every night - 12 hours
is recommended for a five year old.
-
Teach
your child basic road safety, and familiarise them with the
route to school.
-
A
happy, positive attitude from you will always benefit your
child. Kiss them goodbye, tell them you'll be back later,
and have your cry at a friend's place over a cuppa.
-
Provide opportunities for your child to spend some time away
from the family before school starts - play with friends,
overnight, etc
|
-
Teach your child responsibility, for their own
belongings - don't be your child's pack horse! Encourage your child
to hang up his own bag, put lunch box back in bag, put toys away in
his/her room.
-
Set the tone for the day at home - a grumpy stressful
beginning will affect the children for the rest of the day.
-
Individual goodbyes/hugs
-
Plan your time
-
Use your time shopping together, travelling in the
car, walking to school to develop language and their understanding
of the world.
-
Spend some time enjoying a book together, maybe some
quiet moments before bedtime
-
Encourage drawing and writing at home by providing
paper and pencils.
