Context

Wangaratta West Primary School is located in Phillipson Street in the western area of the City of Wangaratta. School enrolment is in the range of 360 to 380. The majority of the students are drawn from the local area.

Our school recognizes and values the differences in children. It believes that all children can be successful. Optimum learning takes place when children, parents and teachers work in partnership. This partnership is highlighted by the involvement of parents in school activities. Clear communication between home and school plays an important role in developing this relationship.

Students are offered a wide range of experiences, which will assist in the development of:

  • excellence in learning

  • confidence, self-esteem and independence

  • respect for others

  • responsibility for learning.

Student participation and responsibility is encouraged through "Kids In Action" (KIA). This elected group seeks the opinions of other children, has a role in decision making, plays a part in playground development, raises money to support a child through World Vision and assists parents and teachers in organizing various events.

Our school provides quality programs in the eight Key Learning Areas (KLA’s) of:  English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Health and Physical Education, Studies of Society and Environment, The Arts and Japanese. Delivery of the curriculum is highlighted by an integrated approach to learning and extensive joint planning. Classroom learning is enriched through specialist programs in the Arts (Music and Art-Craft) and Library. The Library borrowing system is computerized. A wide variety of extra curricular activities add another dimension to the school's programs. These activities include: choir, ensemble groups, inter school sport, lunch time sport, camps and excursions, abseiling, Bike Education, the “Mate” system

Our school has an impressive array of Information Technology resources.  A state of the art computer network connects all buildings and classrooms.  Information Technology is used across all learning areas.  The school has reached the benchmark of one computer for every five children.

Children need to leave school with a range of skills and strategies, which will last them for a lifetime. As a school which is accredited, as both a “Sunsmart” and a “Bike Safe” school, we acknowledge our long term responsibilities to our children.

Our school is organized into four teaching and learning units. These are based on curriculum levels.  Classes are a majority of straight grades with a small number of composite classes, if required. Organizational decisions are made which reflect the needs of the children, the demographics of the school population and the preferences of the school community.

Our school has two main buildings and a modern detached library. Within the main buildings are classrooms, administration area, staff facilities, music room, art-craft room, multi-purpose room and a cookery area.

All buildings were refurbished in the mid 1990’s and are well maintained. The grounds are attractive with well- established gardens, shaded areas, a paved barbecue area, a variety of playing surfaces, extensive netball courts, a plant propagation facility, playground equipment and passive recreation areas. A council oval is adjacent to the boundary of the school.  Only children from our school use the oval during school hours.

School Charter Priorities

  • The development of a whole school sequential numeracy program based on the Early Years Numeracy model.

  • Social competency.  This priority may involve the implementation of the “You Can Do It” program.

These developments will sharpen the focus on mathematics learning and ensure that student welfare remains as a clear focus in the school.
